My Art Rings are riveted onto sterling silver bands. The bowl toppers are part or my series “I used to be a hot water cylinder”.
Circles are cut out of old hot water cylinders, then hammered (and HAMMERED!!) into a bowl shape. Some are riveted on before decorating, some are riveted towards the end of the embellishment process.
“Om is where the heart is” has text layered under low fired enamel and pigments, then pure silver wire was wound and riveted to attach it to the band.
The underside of the bowl is pigmented black and waxed with the natural copper patina showing through.
The size is average for a woman, I wear these on my middle finger as they are quite heavy so need to be firm to keep the ring stable.
These fine silver geometric earrings are made from Precious Metal Clay – fantastic stuff, that is pure recycled silver blended into a clay binder.
Rolled, shaped and textured, the piece is left to dry, then fired to burn off the clay binder. And we then have a solid piece of pure silver.
I have attached good quality sterling silver wires to the earrings, added patina to define the geometric pattern, then polished.
Because these are pure silver earrings, they won’t tarnish like sterling silver will. So apart from a gentle clean in warm water, they will not need any polishing – in fact polishing will remove the patina. I have protected the pieces with micro-crystalline wax.
These earrings are made from pure silver precious metal clay (PMC). I have fallen in love with PMC the possibilities are endless! PMC is reclaimed silver from silver nitrate in old films. Ground into a clay binder it can then be worked like porcelain clay. So suits my recycling criteria perfectly.
After shaping, carving or stamping, it is left to dry, then sanded and cleaned up before firing. Firing burns off the clay binder and we are left with pure silver.
The floral heart earrings are attached to sterling silver earwires which is a bit more robust than pure silver. I add patina, and polish to get the gorgeous pattern more defined.
Blue Moon is another neckpiece from my series “I used to be a hot water cylinder”.
The focal piece is cut, hammered and folded from an old hot water cylinder. It has layers and layers of pigments and wax giving it luminosity.
It is attached to hammered reclaimed copper, threaded with beads that have been cut and hammered from old refrigerator pipe, and coloured with pigments and wax.
Factory waste sari silk that has been wrapped in pure silver wire attaches round the back of the piece, and a focal bead of howlite, threaded with a silver nail hangs to one side.
My series “I used to be a hot water cylinder” grew out fossicking round scrap yards and have one fabulous man “Hillbilly” who tucks aside interesting pieces of metal for me. I have a stash of old hot water cylinders which I cut, hammer, roll and shape.
Blue Dreaming has a focal piece that is hammered and rolled from a piece of hot water cylinder. Then coloured with layers and layers of Prisma colours and pigments.
The beads are hand made also, hammered from reclaimed plumber’s pipe and coloured with layers of patina in several processes and waxed. Attached to hammered and soldered electrical wire, also hand waxed and coloured, around the back of the neck, factory waste sari silk that has been wrapped in pure silver wire (recycled of course!).
Blue Dreaming is embellished with smaller hot water cylinder pieces, and pure silver spirals.
